Day School/MDO

Day School/MDO

Originally created in 1965 for 3, 4, and 5 year olds, the program has grown to include classes from nursery through 5th grade. Children must be 12 months old by September 1st to be eligible for nursery class.

Chapel is held every Wednesday morning at 8:15.This is a non-denominational service open to the students and parents of the school. Although religion is not a classroom subject, we feel that our teachers convey a Christian attitude.

Each class is limited in size and self-contained. With small classes, the teachers are able to provide a setting and opportunity for discovery and learning. The class size varies with the age of each group. Nursery classes are limited to 5 for the youngest and the 1st - 5th classes have a limit of 20 children.

There is an annual registration fee for each class and tuition is paid monthly in advance.

Nursery classes have the least number of children with only five children in the youngest nursery class. The nursery classrooms are well equipped with cribs, high chairs, changing tables and age appropriate toys. Although many of the youngest children are not walking in the fall when school starts, they are transported out to the play ground in strollers. We have a refrigerator available for the storage of food and formula.

MDO children must be potty trained by the age of three. The MDO teachers will assist parents who are in the process of training their children.

What We Believe

Western Hills believes in a sound basic education for children. Reading is a phonics-based program that begins with the pre-school classes. Other subjects taught are mathematics, science, social studies (including geography), writing and spelling. Graduates of the school have displayed self-confidence and high self-esteem that enables them to excel academically and socially in schools they attend later. Basic computer skills are taught utilizing a computer lab.

Physical education, art and music are offered in addition to regular classroom subjects. The PE program works on basic sport skills. In the spring, the first grade is transported to the YWCA for swimming lessons and the 2nd through 5th grades receive tennis lessons from a tennis professional instructor. The younger children participate in a body rhythmic class, which is an exercise program coordinated with music. Teachers are provided for music and physical education classes.
