Top Ten Things to Remember in a New Year
1.  The Bible will still have answers for all of our lives.
2.  Prayer will still be the most effective weapon available for change in the world.
3.  The Holy Spirit will still move on the hearts of people.
4.  Jesus will remain in the salvation business for every heart that will turn to him.
5.  God will still ihabit the praises of His people.
6.  God will still call and anoint faithful persons to preach the Word.
7.  God’s people will still sing praise to Him in the tragedies and triumphs of life.
8.  God will still pour out a blessing on all people.
9.  There will still be room at the Cross for everyone and Grace will be sufficient for all.
10.  Jesus will still seek the lost and call us to be the hands and feet of the search.
And finally, a word of thanks and gratitude to everyone who fulfilled their pledges, giving intentions and extra gifts to Western Hills this season.  God blessed us through each of you to be able to bless others for mission and ministry throughout the world and our own neighborhood.  On behalf of Grant Wheeler and the Finance Committee, thank you for being so generous and faithful.  Happy New Year blessings to each of you.
Pastor Mark
How’s your prayer life?
True story….. Lew was in his early sixties, affluent, well dressed, handsome. He had really done well in his business, and had enough folks working for him so  he could spend as much time as he wanted to on the golf course, or on vacation. He had been married for 30+ years, his children were grown, finished college – through grad school, had careers of their own. He and his wife attended church weekly and Sunday School. Life was GOOD, very good.  But Lew was miserable, unhappy and discontent.
His wife suggested he talk to the pastor. He did – and first shared his general discontent, and then specific discontent regarding the worship services of the previous week. He said he doubted he should ever have married his wife – she irritated him every time she looked at him.  The senior pastor listened, without interrupting, while writing a note down here and there as Lew told him everything that was wrong.  He looked up at Lew when he was finished and asked a single question, “how’s your prayer life these days?”.
Lew described the sensation he felt when the question was asked – a mixture of how dare you – and are you kidding me?  And then he said he realized something for the first time. He had no prayer life. Sure he went to church on Sunday – and even led the closing prayer in his Sunday School class sometimes.  But he had no ongoing one on one relationship with God. He walked out of the office, and went home. Without saying a word.
One year later…. Lew was telling anyone who would listen about the way God had changed him; once he started praying.  He was appreciative of his wife, his kids, his employees.  He was taking Disciple 1 Bible Study – studying the scriptures daily, serving on the Finance Committee, helping with Youth Sunday School.  Two nights each week he was at church teaching English as a Second Language classes. One of the Vietnamese women, after she passed her citizenship test – came to thank him. She gave him a leather wallet – but it was when she said “I want to be like you Mr. Lew and the other people here” that he was overcome with emotion. He told me “Isn’t God incredible -   Forty years ago – if you had ever told me that I would be sitting in the same room with Vietnamese people – I’d never have believed you.”
This Sunday we will be “recounting the gracious deeds and remembering the days of old” – a good place to start – whenever we pray.  It’s a good place to start the New Year too.

In His Service,
Amy

We are working out the bugs. I was so excited about getting the new format out to you, that I made a couple of mistakes. I hope they are all found and fixed in this version.
Again, thanks for your patience!

Christmas is Upon Us
By the time you read this, Christmas may already be past.  If it has not, please remember our three services of worship this Friday evening.  At 4:30 pm, we will have a Service of Hope, Healing and Holy Communion.  The service is particularly designed for those we know who don’t see this as the most wonderful time of the year.  If you or someone you know is more down than up during this time of year, or someone who grieves this time of year, or someone who simply experiences seasonal depression, the service will offer healing and hopeful moments.  Often, we hear this is a difficult time of year to lose someone or to remember the loss of someone.  There really is no good time to grieve, and this may be a better time than we think.  After all, it is the time we remember God coming to us to save us.  Ask someone to visit with you.
At 6:00 pm, we will have our traditional family service with carols and candles, along with moments to celebrate with and see our children and youth help us re-experience Christmas through their eyes.  The service concludes, of course, with candle-lighting  and singing Silent Night, Holy Night.  It is truly a service with something for everyone, so invite friends, neighbors and family members to be with you.
Finally at 11:00, we celebrate the coming of Jesus through lessons and carols, all couched in the celebration of Holy Communion, followed by candle-lighting and singing Silent Night, Holy Night.  It is a profound service that reminds us of the purpose of Jesus coming as much as it reminds us of how.  There is nothing more special in the world than leaving the sanctuary at midnight and walking into the cool night air of Christmas morning.  Come to one, come to all, and bring someone with you.
On the 26th, the Sunday morning following Christmas, we will remember in Word and Message how the first responders to the entry of Jesus in the world decided to respond. Andi Wallace has come home from Asbury Seminary, and she will be sharing with us and breaking the Bread of Life from Matthew’s Gospel.  You won’t want to miss her message or worship that morning either.  It will bring the season to a close and grant us the opportunity to begin looking forward to, if you can you believe it, 2011 and all the promise a new year brings.
See you soon in the place where He still meets us in all our celebrations and struggles,
Pastor Mark
