Weekend Update 10-8-10
What’s it all about, again? The questions this week have rolled in from Sunday’s first exposure to the Road Trip. Words like “gimmick” and others that seemed a pejorative all came my way about the display and signs. SO, here’s what it’s all about…The Road Trip is a reminder of all the ways we profess our faith and support our church each week in ministry. The vows (not intended to be multiple choice by the way) are our commitment to proclaim and support the ministry of Christ through our prayers, presence, gifts, service and witness. This fall, we are considering all five areas as we journey through October and consider how we might volunteer our time, talent and treasure to support the ministry and change lives. We are doing these in stages, rather than one single Sunday so we can consider more fully opportunities God may be calling us to fulfill. Some of the “traffic signs” along the way are reminders of those vows and their shape is symbolic. Prayer was printed on a sign shaped like a yield sign, a reminder to start the day and end it in prayer, as well as volunteer for the ministry area. A view of those opportunities were in the Narthex of the church. This week, we will note something about the Presence portion of our vows, shaped like a stop sign. The shape is intended to remind us to stop our busy lives long enough to observe the Sabbath and keep it holy. It is about stopping long enough somewhere in our week to be of help and support to others in a small group, and allow that group to be so for us. Presence is best understood as being present with the Body of Christ in worship and as the Body of Christ in a small group or class setting. You will see on display all of the opportunities this week to serve that go along with the presence opportunities.Throughout the month, the Narthex scene will change but the emphasis will not. The “No Parking” signs are intended to remind us that we are not to be “sitters and soakers” but the ministers of the church. There will be one this month that announces “Welcome to the State of Grace” like so many of the state welcome signs we see when we travel. The benefit, of course, in our participation means a state of fulfillment in the grace of Christ as we see the use of our time, talent and treasure giving back to us in unexpected ways. The “Fully Devoted 5″ sign is designed to resemble a highway distance marker, so that we can see how far we may need to go to fulfill our vows. Am I at mile one (prayers), mile two (presence), mile three (service), mile four (gifts) or mile five (witness)? If at mile five, I can consider myself “fully devoted, living in the State of Grace,” not parked on the road to full devotion. Hopefully the rest of the shapes will be self-explanatory.A couple of weeks back, someone asked me some probing questions about my own participation – how was I doing in regard to those? The question was primarily about my gifts of $$ to the church, but also about all of the vows. I went on to divulge what our giving to Western Hills looked like last year and what it looks like this year. I went on to tell the person how I believed I was fulfilling the vows. ”You don’t really think I could ask all of the church to do something I was not willing to do and expect a good result, do you?” The response was, “No, I guess not.” I hope that realization is as life-changing for the person as it has been for me.The Road Trip is not meant to foster a sense of obligation, but one of fulfillment – we really do receive from God, from one another, and from our full involvement much more than we give. So, here’s to full devotion, and seeing you soon in the place where the God we worship calls us to an expectation that gives us more than we give, just as He himself did at the Cross – something we will never be able to equal, much less out-give.And remember to look as you exit Sunday morning – positioned above the exit doors of the sanctuary are these words: ”Exit to a World in Need.” That was Jesus’ passion. He exited heaven – to a world in need.Blessings,Pastor Mark |
