June 25 Weekend Update

Filed under: Weekly Update — admin @ 9:37 am
Well, it’s finally happened.  I got to know more about Twitter today than I ever thought I would know or ever need to know.  Yes, I did open my own account and this marks one of the few moments in life I have caved and bowed to the pressure of peers, family members, and people with whom I attend church.  You can find me (I think) with a current handle borrowed from one of my wife’s terms of endearment for me.  And by the way,the correct spelling was already taken – go figure.  I am @irreverantrev.
I thought I would be fully daring and complete the experience by finding some folks and threads of conversation to follow, say about the World Cup, baseball, and WesternHillsep. I tried multiple times to join only to be given the rescued whale symbol rebuffing me that Twitter has been doing some maintenance and there are apparently too many folks attempting to use the site during maintenance.  Alas, now my profile is incomplete and who will know I am out there dear friends, still wanting to experience the trendy way of having ambient, artificial intimacy with all of my followers.  Who will be able to find me?
I took it as a sign from God.  I should not be wasting time gabbing into cyberspace with people I know and people I don’t.  I should not be social networking and sending random thoughts out into the internet seeing if someone will hear me shouting into the darkness.  I should not be expecting anyone to find or follow me.  (now you understand more about the ‘rant’ portion of my Twitter handle, huh?)

If Solomon could tweet, he might just say, “Give up, it may not be all it’s cracked up to be.

Get some paper and write some letters with a quill pen to be delivered by a rider on horseback!”  Don’t even come to me about Facebook this weekend.

See you in worship where the One who desires to meet us still speaks with a still small voice.

June 18 Weekend Update

Filed under: Uncategorized, Weekly Update — admin @ 2:43 pm

My daughter was home from college a couple of weeks ago, having finished her second semester.  She found me in my study that Thursday, working away on a message.  She asked me lots of questions then said, “I am so glad to be home – If Solomon Could Tweet – who else thinks of that?”  I am hopeful that the series has made a good deal of sense to everyone from the concepts to the application in worship.  Solomon’s experience of seeking wisdom and answers to life when there sometimes are none to be had is also ours.  Where and how we find comfort in the silence is the key to surviving our walk with the Spirit.

This week we take up the chapter with which most of us have some familiarity.  The third chapter was placed in the minds of radio listeners by the rock group known as The Byrds years ago.  Their passionate and folksy ode developed from the passage held out its truths for the culture to hear, even if they didn’t know their source or understand its meaning.

This week, we take up the reality of time – a time for every activity or purpose under heaven.  Soloman can acknowledge that “time marches on” and in his view, nothing much changes with the passages of time from the tick-tock of the clock.  However, he also wants us not to miss the special moments in time when things that once were appropriate are not, and when things that were not, now are.  The Greeks of course, could relate this in unqualified terms.  Stay tuned for Sunday, when we will talk about what that means.
